Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM)

In order to prepare our children for an ever and fast-changing world, we offer STEAM learning opportunities. These experiences require our pupils to think deeply and challenge themselves and prepare them for becoming innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders of today and tomorrow.

Science

At Iqra Primary, we provide the children with high-quality science education. This gives children the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Speaking and listening is an integral part of our science. It not only encourages children to use scientific vocabulary accurately but also allows them to build upon basic ideas, developing and extending their thinking.

We aim to develop a love of science through awe and wonder. Our teachers plan engaging and inspirational investigations in which children are encouraged to work scientifically through. Educational visits and workshops are arranged to reinforce the science learning.

Technology

At Iqra Primary, we strive to give our children skills to thrive in the ever changing technological world and technical knowledge. Our pupils are entitled to quality software and hardware and a structured and progressive approach to the learning of the skills needed to enable them to use it effectively.

Our up to date curriculum includes designing and writing programmes all the way through to explaining how a simple algorithm works. We provide many opportunities for learners to collaborate and communicate through online technologies.

Providing one computer for each child in the class provides the opportunity for children to acquire independence and competence, which can be applied across the whole curriculum.

Children also learn how to best use the internet for learning, whilst also keeping themselves safe. Our aim is to create users of technology which are highly skilled as well as digitally literate.

We have a class set of tablets to further enhance learning. Apps are carefully selected and downloaded to best help children move forward in different subject areas. Children can learn from educational applications or can even record their own explanations for other children to learn from.

We also have a class set of virtual reality headsets to further accelerate learning across the curriculum. Use of virtual reality allows pupils to immerse themselves into settings and experiences, providing them with incredibly realistic experiences.

Engineering

Children enjoy creating and making new things and we foster this through the teaching of Design and Technology.

We encourage our children to use their imagination and creativity to design, make and problem solve using a variety of materials. Our aim is to provide children with the opportunities to build and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills to complete practical tasks successfully and to use appropriate tools safely.

Children in both key stages have the opportunity to prepare and cook healthy food, use different textiles, build structures, and explore and use mechanisms. In key stage 2, children learn to use electrical systems and computing programs in their products.

Music

Iqra is a musical school! The excellent and ambitious music curriculum is taught by specialist music teachers with strong links to the Slough Music Service and the music industry.

All children have whole class music sessions and choir sessions. Children are given opportunities to sing and record their songs in a professional recording studio. They work alongside professional sound engineers where they select and assemble their recordings using Logic Pro* in preparation for the final mastering of their song.

We also invite musicians to play during workshops and popular artists to perform during special assemblies.

Through our drive for excellence the Iqra choir has performed at several public events including The One Eid Festival at Westfield (London), Berkshire Multicultural Festival, Islam Channel Studios and the Voice in a Million at the SSE Arena, Wembley

Drama

At Iqra we use digital technologies to innovatively inspire our pupils to enhance and enrich the curriculum. When planning drama projects, we adopt a cross curricular, innovative approach to enhance pupils understanding of our enriched, broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to offer unique experiences and opportunities empowering the future generation to acquire, demonstrate, articulate and contribute to a global digital world.

Drama/ Media Awards

Year 5 and 6 pupils were awarded the Buckinghamshire and Berkshire CUT FILMS 2018 award for their short films on Anti-Smoking. The project allowed pupils to develop transferable and decision making skills, as well as gaining a better understanding of the dangers of being a smoker and a passive smoker, which hopefully will stay with them throughout their lives.

Taking part in this video was an eye-opener. Although we were aware of the fact that smoking is harmful to the human body, we learnt more on how we can talk to and encourage our loved ones to quit smoking.’ Sahim, Year 6 pupil

“Working on this project has helped me build resilience and a stronger understanding on how to say no to smoking.”   Junaid, Year 5 pupil

We create immersive themed event days where children step back in time into historical periods and relive key historical events using drama.

Art

Art embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Forestdale Primary school we provide a high-quality art education that engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Our pupils are encouraged to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art.

The creative element involves children using materials and equipment to represent objects realistically and imaginatively, and to express ideas and feelings. With this in mind, breadth and depth of the subjects is offered with a wide range of materials and skills, including the use of digital art.

Our children learn how art reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

All year groups have opportunities to visit galleries, museums and other venues for maximum exposure to as varied a range of art and craft work as possible.
