Media Studies
At Iqra Primary School, we are committed to equipping our children with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-evolving digital world. Our innovative media curriculum not only incorporates the latest technologies but also encourages children to engage meaningfully with their writing and creative expression. While it’s not always feasible to create real audiences for every writing task, we believe that even simulated audiences can clarify expectations and enhance learning.
Many of our children already write for real audiences outside of school - crafting stories, poems, and diaries. Our media projects energise them to explore diverse writing forms, allowing for personal reflection through journals while connecting their experiences as budding “media monsters.” This approach fosters creativity and gives students more choice over their subjects, enhancing their engagement and ownership of their work.
"In the digital world, your only limit is your imagination."
Every child at Iqra has the opportunity to work with filming equipment to record their projects, enabling them to bring their stories to life. They learn to use software for editing and enhancing footage, sifting through sound options to select the most appropriate audio for their creations. Collaborating as a team, students produce short films, snippets, or video clips, fostering teamwork and enhancing their communication skills.
In addition to video projects, we are excited to offer our own podcast setup, allowing children to create their own podcasts based on topics that ignite their passion and curiosity. This platform encourages them to research, script, and share their ideas, fostering public speaking skills and confidence in their voices.
Our media projects provide all pupils with the opportunity to delve into the artistic practice of drama. They adopt, create, and sustain various roles through these projects, responding thoughtfully to their peers. They have the chance to improvise, devise, and script dramas for a range of audiences, honing their skills through rehearsal and performance.
Our commitment to experiential learning is further demonstrated by our pupils' visits to Sky Studios, where they gain first hand insight into the world of broadcasting and media production. These experiences inspire and motivate them to explore their creativity. Additionally, our children have proudly participated in and won filming competitions (Arts council), showcasing their talents and reinforcing their skills in a competitive environment.
Recognising the crucial role of spoken language in cognitive, social, and linguistic development, we ensure that our curriculum emphasises the importance of effective communication. The quality and variety of language that children hear and speak are essential for their vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. At Iqra, we are dedicated to continuously developing our pupils’ confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills, preparing them to be articulate and engaged members of a digital society.
"The future belongs to those who understand and harness the power of technology."
Through our dynamic approach, we are not just teaching students to navigate technology; we are inspiring them to become thoughtful digital leaders who can communicate and create with purpose.
